A bridal registry is a service offered by retailers to help make the gift selection process easy for your guests and the gift receiving process especially rewarding and useful for the couple. Gift registries have become very popular and are available from department and specialty stores to online shopping websites.
The registry records your selections and prints out a copy of them when your guest is shopping for a gift. All purchases made through your registry are tracked and noted on your list so you don't get duplicate gifts. You are also provided with a printed record of your gifts to help with thank you note writing.
Going shopping for your gift registry can be one of the most exciting parts of the wedding planning process. But sometimes you are so overwhelmed with choices that you don't even know where to begin. Many stores have a bridal consultant on staff to help you with your selections. Traditional gift registries included dinnerware, crystal, and silverware. Today's registries typically span a range of choices, from home furnishings to unique one-of-a-kind gifts.
You should register as soon as possible after your engagement. Many people like to use the gift registry for other occasions also, such as birthdays, showers and special holidays. Make sure you select items in all price ranges and include enough items and variety for people to choose from. Be practical when making your selections and choose enough items that would be considered a nice gift for a reasonable price. Friends or co-workers will often get together and purchase higher priced gifts jointly, so don't hesitate to include a variety of big ticket items.
Wedding etiquette dictates that you may include registry information in your shower invitations but not in the wedding invitations. Most registries will provide a card for you to use listing the store and location. Encourage your attendants, close friends and family, especially mom and mother-in-law, to spread the word about where you have registered.
Many registries offer mail-order services and other conveniences such as free gift-wrapping and delivery. After the wedding your bridal registry can be converted to a regular gift registry. This enables post-wedding gift givers to find something you still need.
Before heading out to set up your registry and make your selections, sit down with your fiancee and talk about your personal style, tastes, and preferences. Think about color schemes, design styles, and how you want to coordinate your home together. Don't feel like you have to accomplish everything in one trip, the groom may only be able to take this mega-shopping trip in small doses.
Take your time, have fun and Happy Shopping!
