Let’s Dance!
By: Christal Knowles-Feldman
Owner, Sunsational Weddings and Events

While most wedding couples plan to participate in the traditional first dance, most of them don’t know anything about dancing. With the overwhelming popularity of reality TV Shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars”, it’s no surprise that wedding couples are having their “First Dance” professionally choreographed. Dance Studios like Arthur Murray and John Parnell have recently seen an increase in ballroom dance lessons.

Your “First Dance” can set the mood for the evening. It’s important to choose a meaningful song and a dance that expresses your personality or feelings for each other. If you are having difficulty choosing between songs, incorporate a “Last Dance” to conclude the evening.

Waltz? Fox Trot? Salsa? What’s your style?

A professional dance instructor can help you decide what style of dancing is best suited for your favorite music and how many lessons you will need. When you step on the dance floor for the first time as husband and wife, all eyes will be on you. It’s important to feel comfortable and confident.

When will you find the time to learn these special moves before the big day? Many dance studios offer private lessons at convenient times and locations throughout the Central Florida area. Others offer group lessons, so why not invite your wedding party to participate? If you still can’t find the time, instructional dance videos are available.

FIRST DANCE TIPS

1 - Begin to practice at least 6 to 12 months before the big day and practice in your wedding shoes.

2 - Take into consideration the style of dress that you are wearing.

3 - Consider the size of the dance floor before choosing a style of dance.

4 - Have your music professionally edited. If editing is not an option, have your DJ fade the song at a pre-determined point or invite the wedding party to join you on the dance floor for the remainder of the song.

Don’t be the wedding couple that just sways back and forth. Take this opportunity to relieve the stress of planning your wedding, while acquiring grace, poise and confidence. You will treasure the romance, fun and excitement that dancing brings into your life.
